The German Film Office is pleased to present Sabrina Sarabi’s award-winning film No One’s with the Calves as its German Movie Night selection for October. The film will be available for free streaming across the United States.

Five houses, one bus stop, cows and nothing but fields. 24-year-old Christin lives on a farm with her long-term boyfriend Jan and his family. The exciting post-reunification years that defined her childhood are long gone. Her relationship is loveless. So she keeps the cherry liqueur close at hand. In the shimmering heat of summer, time seems to stand still – until 46-year-old wind energy engineer, Klaus, arrives.

Based on the eponymous novel by Alina Herbing (2017).

World premiere: Locarno Film Festival

Awards: Best Actress Saskia Rosendahl, Locarno Film Festival, 2021; Hamburg Producers Award, Filmfest Hamburg, 2021; Best Sound Design, German Film Awards, 2022; Best Cinematography / Feature Film, German Camera Awards, 2022

“There is this landscape between Hamburg and Berlin where you find yourself in this parallel existence of anarchy, patriarchy, and the familiar smell of slurry tankers. That fascinated me right away.” (Director Sabrina Sarabi)

“With an ultra-realistic and precise eye, Sabina Sarabi scrutinizes a dormant world which is nonetheless bubbling away from the inside, inhabited by those who have been forgotten by progress but who nonetheless dream of consumerism; youngsters in rebellion against a world which no longer has anything to offer them, if not for a bottle of low-cost alcohol. Without resorting to sensationalism, No One’s With the Calves affects us for the cruel banality of the everyday life it depicts.” (Giorgia Del Don, Cineuropa)
