Special in-person screening of Birgit Möller’s award-winning film, followed by a conversation

The German Film Office is pleased to present a special in-person screening of Birgit Möller’s award-winning film Franky Five Star at the Goethe-Institut New York, followed by a conversation between lead actor Lena Urzendowsky and Maddie Whittle, Assistant Programmer at Film at Lincoln Center. Please register to attend.
Register Introverted 20-something Franky is unpredictable and erratic. Her best friend and roommate, Katja, knows about her changing moods, but Franky has never revealed her biggest secret. Deep in her head, she has an old-fashioned hotel that is inhabited by four odd but lovable characters: a strict concierge, a seductive chambermaid, a bell boy, and a child. Whenever Franky is in an uncomfortable situation, one of the four personalities rides the hotel elevator and takes control of her emotions.

Too busy dealing with this inner chaos, Franky has never let herself fall in love. Things change when she meets Katja’s new boyfriend, Hasi. As Franky starts to fall for Hasi, her other personalities take over, and things spiral out of control. Urzendowsky’s outstanding performance as the quirky yet charming Franky offers an imaginative and refreshing take on coming-of-age and finding your true self, or selves.

Franky Five Star won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2023 Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis in Saarbrücken.
