With actor/screenwriter Tucké Royale in attendance
The German Film Office is pleased to present a screening of the award-winning film Neubau (2020) by Johannes Maria Schmit, followed by a Q&A with lead actor and screenwriter Tucké Royale. Please register to attend.
Summer in Brandenburg: Markus works on an ostrich farm and cares for his grandmother, who has dementia. He spends his time daydreaming about Berlin, torn between his family responsibilities and his desire for the freedom and queer glamour of city life. When he finally makes up his mind and starts packing, Duc shows up.“[Neubau trusts] the soft course between opposites and maintains the tension between the desire to arrive and the painful longing for departure until the very end.”—Cosima Lutz, Filmdienst
Neubau won Best Feature Film and the Social Interest Film Award at the Max Ophüls Film Festival in 2020. Johannes Maria Schmit received a German Film Critics Award for Best Feature Debut in 2021.
