KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online club to discuss films from Germany.

How it works: Each month, we choose a German film currently available to stream on U.S. platforms, watch it independently, and come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German cinema.

Our November session highlights Pina (2011), Wim Wenders’ award-winning 3D documentary tribute to German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. An over twenty-year project, the film began as a collaboration between Wenders and Bausch to bring her highly dynamic dance pieces to the screen. When Bausch died unexpectedly during production in 2009, Wenders—convinced by Bausch’s dancers—adapted the film as a memorial in motion: part dance film, part elegy.
KINO! Film Salon host Jim Kolmar notes that the film “pushes the boundaries of documentary form further than anyone expected. Conceived as a 3D experience, Pina eschews conventional plot and narrative structure, favoring a more organic representation of Pina’s strikingly choreographed sequences. Between them, they fill the screen with extraordinary images that are perhaps the closest cinema has ever come to truly conveying the spirit, joy and artistry of dance.”

Pina won the German Film Award for Best Documentary Film and the European Film Award for Best Documentary. At the 84th Academy Awards, Pina was nominated for Best Documentary Feature and was selected as Germany’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film.

Hosted by Jim Kolmar

Jim programs for SXSW and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival, and was a founding committee member of Festival Internacional de Cine Tulum (FICTU). He has participated in numerous international festival juries, panels, and committees.

KINO!Film Salon is a production of Telescope Film, in partnership with the German Film Office.
