KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online club to discuss films from Germany.
How it works: Each month, we choose a German film currently available to stream on U.S. platforms, watch it independently, and come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German cinema.
At our May session, we’ll discuss Mascha Schilinski’s haunting, critically acclaimed Sound of Falling. Screenwriter Louise Peter will join to introduce and discuss the film.
In a sprawling farmhouse in northeastern Germany, four girls—Alma in the somber 1910s, Erika in the crisis years of World War II, Angelika in the GDR in the 1980s, and Lenka in the present day—find resonances of desire, suffering, and memory as their lives begin to mirror one another across the decades.
“Sound of Falling is a marvel of cinematic ingenuity,” writes KINO! Film Salon host Jim Kolmar. “Utilizing stunning imagery, innovative sound design, and a truly unique grasp of tone and texture, it’s a film that demands discussion and seems destined to resonate for many decades to come.”
Sound of Falling world premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it was awarded the Jury Prize. It was selected as Germany’s official entry for Best International Feature at the 2026 Oscars.
Hosted by Jim Kolmar
Jim programs for SXSW and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival and was a founding committee member of Festival Internacional de Cine Tulum (FICTU). He has participated in numerous international festival juries, panels, and committees.
KINO!Film Salon is a production of Telescope Film, in partnership with the German Film Office.
