The Brutalization of Language in Political Discourse

Panel discussion

Speaker: Claudia Roth, Anna Szilagi, Carlos Celdran
Presented by: Tilo Jung
Language: English/GermanE-Werk, Maschinensaal

Loud, blustering and aggressive – a recipe for success in grabbing media attention. Have politeness and mutual respect become obsolete in political debates? Where does vigorous discussion end and the language of hatred begin? Is negatively charged discourse simply a means to an end, a populist tool – or are we experiencing a creeping linguistic shift that extends beyond political discourse? The panel analyses current examples and discusses what happens when hate speech gradually becomes firmly entrenched in public consciousness.
