Studio Quantum San Francisco
The Goethe-Institut San Francisco promotes cultural exchange, education, and social discourses in an American context, connects different perspectives from Germany and the USA and supports the teaching and learning of the German language since 1967.
The Goethe-Institut is an integral part of the cultural scene in San Francisco and organises discursive events around current socio-political and historical issues in close cooperation with American and European partners.
In cooperation with Gray Area the Goethe-Institut San Francisco has developed the initiative C/Change.
In times of troubled geopolitical times and growing uncertainties the need for reciprocal learning processes, collaboration and intercultural exchange is more pressing than ever. How can we image the futures of cultural exchanges? How can we use the digital space to learn from each other, exchange ideas and face the collective challenges of the 21st century together?
These challenges, which make cultural exchange necessary, also make it difficult. What to do? Perhaps current technological developments – artificial intelligence, augmented reality and immersive environments, Big Data applications and visualisations, Web3 and Blockchain – enable a deeper and more meaningful collaboration than ever, as long as they are applied with deliberation.
To make digital spaces safe, inclusive and accessible, C/Change develops prototypes of applications of new technologies for cultural exchange online.
The “Studio Quantum” residency in cooperation with the “Djerassi Resident Artists Program” acts as a natural next step in this process. Opening up an interdisciplinary dialogue on the potentials of cutting-edge technologies and unlocking new perspectives on the role of art as an integral part of the conversation.
