Nothing sparks memories and conversations like food. The session
Remembered Meals, focused on two famous Afghan dishes and explored the memories, stories and experiences around them. These were Haft Mewa, a dish traditionally made for Nauroz celebrations, and Shor Nakhud, a well-known street food. Our panellists,
Iffat Azimi and
Heyadatullah Afzali shared portions of the dishes as well as their memories of displacement, home and togetherness that these meals draw out, the songs they sang while cooking, and how they deal with the absence of key ingredients while cooking in Delhi.
The moderator, filmmaker
Anupama Chandra was able to connect these experiences with her memories of growing up in Kabul, experiencing the sophisticated food culture of its expat circles in the 1970s.
