1788  his father dies; is sent to Berlin to pursue his studies
1792 joins the Prussian army in Potsdam
1793 - 1797  his mother dies; participates in Rhine Campaign against France; promotion to the rank of second lieutenant
1799 - 1800 quits the army; studies physic and mathematics in Frankfurt /Oder; unofficial engagement to Wilhelmine von Zenge; preparation for the Prussian civil service
1801 - 1804 travels to Paris, Switzerland and Italy; breaks off his engagement to Wilhelmine; suffers a nervous breakdown; publishes "The Family Schroffenstein"
1805 begins work as administrative assistant in Königsberg; finishes "The Broken Jug"
1806 - 1807 resigns from civil service; French forces occupy Prussia; taken prisoner of war by the French; publishes "Amphytrion" and finishes "Penthesilea"
1808 - 1810   publishes the magazine "Phöbus" together with Adam Müller; finishes "Die Hermannsschlacht"; premiere of "Kate of Heilbronn"; publication of first volume of stories and first issue of the "Berliner Abendblätter" 
1811   publication of second volume of stories; finishes "Prince of Homburg"; on 21 November suicide together with Henriette Vogel
