Joseph von Eichendorff

© Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff (1788 – 1857) is one of Germany’s great Romantic poets and novelists. After extensive travels throughout Europe he worked all his life in the civil service. Eichendorff’s poems have been the source of many popular folk songs and have been set to music by composers such as Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Richard Strauss. (list compiled May 2008)
