Announcement 2024
Residency Program Cultural Garage

6 Bab Sharq © Goethe-Institut Alexandria/ Butheina Shalan

The Cultural Garage is a cultural space, founded by Goethe-Institut Alexandria in 2019 under the name 6 Bab Sharq to grant a space to the cultural scene of Alexandria - a space for cultural and artistic experimentation, expression, and training. By offering training and a platform to foster skills that are needed for cultural and artistic work, the Cultural Garage intends to nurture the cultural scene of Alexandria and thus contribute to a growing resilience of cultural actors.
Following a reconceptualization and renaming in early 2024, the space will be offered as a short-term residency space for Alexandrian cultural actors and organizations.

RESIDENCY

The Cultural Garage will be offered as short-term residency space to practitioners in the culture and art fields.
  • 3-8 weeks residency (free use of space and included technical availabilities)
  • 1 training/workshop as per identified need
  • Networking events

The residency intends to address the decline of physical spaces that are available and affordable to independent cultural practitioners. The residency primarily offers the space of the Cultural Garage to the granted practitioners.

The artist(s) in residence will be granted permanent and independent access to the premises. The offer is accompanied by a detailed contract and handover protocol, that includes house rules and duties regarding the use of the space.

TRAINING/WORKSHOP

Every applicant is asked to express a lack of knowledge or skills. Overcoming this lack would bring a big advantage to making the work more sustainable.
Thus, each residency is accompanied by at least one training/workshop. Within 2-6 hours, this training provides concrete tools and methodologies to tackle the identified challenge. Topics could be for example: grant proposal writing, social media marketing, cultural management etc.
The insights gained are also shared to further cultural practitioners in Alexandria.

NETWORKING

The participants of the residencies are invited to gather on a bi-monthly basis to further discuss the needs of the cultural scene of Alexandria and the use of a space like the Cultural Garage, lessons learned and best practices.
