Multicultural classrooms in Europe

Leading the way to a more inclusive teaching

Online

Livestream on the page of Goethe-Institut Athen on Facebook and YouTube

The event is organized under the framework of the Erasmus+ Supporting Inclusion and Diversity in Teaching (SIDiT) project, led by the Goethe-Institut Athen.

During a  90-minute online panel discussion live streamed on the page of Goethe-Institut Athen on Facebook and YouTube, we will provide a platform for dialogue on diversity and inclusion in education and give insights on the SIDiT project’s vision.

During the event, we will be hearing from academics and education experts from universities and organisations across Europe. Participants will learn more about the challenges faced by educational professionals in today’s multicultural classrooms. They will explore good practices and interventions for improving the inclusion and participation of migrant and refugee students, as well as get familiar with existing EU policies in the field of inclusive education.

Panellists:

  • Tita Kaisari-Ernst, Education Specialist, UNICEF GREECE COUNTRY OFFICE
  • Dr. Rory Mc Daid, Lecturer in Sociology of Education and Director of Research / Coordinator of the Migrant Teacher Project, MARINO INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
  • Michele Senici, Education Director, STILL I RISE NGO
  • Vasiliki Katsomaliari, SIDiT Project Coordinator, GOETHE-INSTITUT ATHEN

The project

The SIDiT project supports teachers who are working with students (8-12 years old) from different origin or background, including migrant students. It aims at developing practical guidance and tools to drive change in classroom practices and at policy levels.

Through the project, a teaching methodology for primary schools is developed whose approach predicates on the core principles of inclusive education. The methodology focuses on the simultaneous development of language and transversal skills among young students that are crucial to social inclusion, such as learning to learn, critical thought, media literacy, digital literacy, entrepreneurship. The methodology will be transferred in different primary schools across Europe through consultations with public authorities at local, regional and national level.

The project develops:
• A practical toolkit for teachers and learners in the form of a handbook with sample lesson scenarios
• A physical and online teacher training course that promotes effective and innovative teaching practices
• Policy recommendations for the implementation and transferability of SIDiT, including a review of teacher competence frameworks related to inclusion.
