Denshi Onkyo People Project 2025 @ Goethe-Institut Tokyo

Sound Montage Workshop

Sunday, August 31, 2025 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Venue: Goethe-Institut Tokyo Hall 7-5-56 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-0052
Instructors: Saburo Ubukata, Tomoko Nakai, Seiichiro Matsumura Facilitator: Takuro Shibayama
The "Denshi Onkyo People (Electroacoustic People) Project" involves recording a variety of sounds that are not typically used in conventional music and creating electroacoustic music through a computer montage. Electroacoustic music is an innovative form of music created by freely combining various sounds using computers, making it slightly different and more unconventional compared to the music you usually listen to. After the workshop, professional composer instructors will compile participants' finished works into a collaborative piece, which will be presented as "Everyone's Work" at a special live event in November. No one knows exactly what kind of "music" will emerge. Let us share this unknown experience with the Denshi Onkyo People ’s Project!
No musical experience is required. Participation is free! (A refundable deposit of 3,000 yen is required to secure your spot and will be returned upon participation.)
Capacity: 15 people (first-come, first-served; open to everyone from 2nd graders to adults. 2nd and 3rd graders must be accompanied by a guardian.)
Please bring your lunch.

Activities: Become an electroacoustic person!

1. Various sounds are collected by hitting, dropping, and crushing!
2. Create music using collected sounds with the guidance of veteran instructors!
3. Collaboratively complete your music with the instructors!
4. Present your finished work at a live event.

What is the Denshi Onkyo People Project?:

Launched by composer and sound artist Takuro Shibayama, this participatory art project aims to make electroacoustic music, often perceived as experimental or difficult to access, to a diverse audience. Participants record sounds made from everyday objects rather than traditional instruments and then montage them on computers. No musical experience or knowledge is required. After the workshop, professional composers serving as instructors combined the participants' creations into one collaborative work titled "Everyone’s Work, which was performed at concerts. This project seeks to transform participants from passive listeners into artists, creating unique and somewhat quirky music while enjoying the creative process together.
