Participatory Puppet Theatre

Alliance Française de Nairobi

A participatory puppet theatre performance, conceptualized by Buni Media (producers of the popular ‘XYZ Show’ which uses puppetry and witty satire to engage its viewers on topical issues). The performance will explore the dynamics of women’s participation as candidates, politicians and voters in the Kenyan political landscape.

Using life size puppets, the show will examine attitudes and challenges that facilitate or hinder women’s participation using the power of narrative and humorous storytelling. The script is derived from real-life experiences and anecdotes from focal group discussions. During the performance, a moderator will facilitate an engaging debate between the puppet/actors and the audience, and will invite the audience to recommend actions/solutions to address the problems.

The performance will also be staged in two neighborhoods within the annual ‘Nai Ni Who?’ Festival, an initiative of the Godown Arts Centre. The interaction with the audiences will be filmed and turned into a short mixed-media film to serve as a sensitization medium for the promotion of women’s representation in political leadership at all levels.
