Art Between Two Cultures: On October 20, artist Sunah Choi will be a guest at the Goethe-Institut Seoul, offering insights into her artistic practice and her long-standing career as a Korean artist in Germany. She will discuss central themes and methods in her work, as well as the challenges and opportunities that come with living and working across different cultural contexts.
Choi will also introduce her teaching at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart through exhibitions and projects she has developed together with her students. In doing so, she will demonstrate how artistic practice and teaching inspire and enrich one another.
Born and raised in Korea, Choi moved to Germany, where she studied fine arts at the State Academy of Fine Arts—Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1995 to 2001, graduating as a master’s student. Today, she lives and works as an independent artist in Berlin and Stuttgart. Sunah Choi also holds a professorship at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where she heads the sculpture class, Class Choi.
Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Burgos Biennial in Spain (2026), at RADIUS – Centre for Contemporary Art and Ecology in Delft, the Netherlands (2026), at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, North Macedonia (2025), at Edition Block in Berlin (2020, 2025), at Kunsthall 3.14 in Bergen, Norway (2020), at the Museum Nikolaikirche in Berlin (2018), and at the Busan Biennale in Korea (2012, 2018). She has received numerous grants and awards for her artistic work, including the Hannah Höch Award from the State of Berlin (2018).
