Opening Statement: Launch of Towards Empathy

After a long period of careful preparation and a defining series of conversations, the Goethe-Institut Myanmar is pleased to announce the launch of its year-long initiative, Towards Empathy, starting this August.

Inspired by the notion of a collapsed architecture of empathy—a poetic metaphor for the fragility of human connection—this project seeks to listen, to feel, and to rebuild, recover, and excavate in times when hardships and constraints push empathy toward oblivion: when we believe in it, yet struggle to embody it fully.

Open Call for Participation

Towards Empathy: Focus Group Discussions

The Goethe-Institut Myanmar invites applications to participate in a series of Focus Group Discussions as part of the initiative phase of its slow project Towards Empathy. This experimental project explores empathy as both a method and a lens—through which we examine human connection, shared experience, and the subtleties of everyday life. These discussions are designed as collaborative, reflective spaces where participants co-develop ideas, exchange perspectives, and contribute to the ongoing conceptual and artistic exploration of empathy.

'WAYS – Towards Fair and Sustainable International Partnerships'

'WAYS – Towards Fair and Sustainable International Partnerships' enables non-European and German cultural institutions or independent artists' groups to work together on long-term artistic projects. WAYS starts with an Initiation Fund (9.5 months). This Fund supports travel and research to help you find and get to know new partners in Germany (or for German groups/institutions to find partners in non-European countries). The Initiation Fund is implemented in cooperation with the @goetheinstitut. After receiving funding from the Initiation Fund, your new German partner may formally apply for one of the subsequent multi-year Fund: Fellows-at-Large or Tandem.
