RE/defining Masculinities
Join us for an evening of discussion on
The Embodiment of Masculinity, where we will hear from prominent voices in the academic field and the art sectors. The panel discusses the themes of body and the physicality of masculinity – what are the expectations on men's bodies in society today, and what are the implications of these expectations?
On the panel, we will hear from speakers such as the writer and journalist
Jochen König (Germany), the Amsterdam and London based photographer and curator
J.M. Kaila (Finland), and Brussels based artist
Xavier Gorgol.
Jochen König is writer and blogger. He lives with his two daughters in Berlin and writes about family, gender, masculinity, love and sex and about the distribution of care work.
The discussion will be moderated by the artist
Alexander Cromer.
We will open the evening with words from the organisers, followed by a screening of
Aurora Reinhard's short film
Boygirl (2002, 13'00").
Welcome to an evening talking about masculinities!
RE/defining Masculinities is a project initiated by the
Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux, with a wide network of partners. The project aims to present and discuss the subject of masculinities from new and cross-disciplinary perspectives through a series of cultural events and academic discussions realised, in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Finland. With this project, we hope to stir and evoke critical thinking, and to break outdated moulds and preconceptions as to what the term masculinity entails in our society today, by not only considering its generic forms and public perceptions – but by also addressing the notions of inclusivity and equality. The project is a part of our theme for 2019, which is
RE/definitions, and is part of the cultural programme for Finland's Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The event is a collaboration between the
Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux and the Goethe-Institut Niederlande in the framework of the
RE/defining Masculinities project.
