In partnership with LIA (Leipzig International Art Programme), the Goethe-Institute offers Nordic artists the opportunity to take up a three-month residency at the Cultural Centre Spinnerei Leipzig. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Spinnerei was Europe’s largest cotton mill, today it is one of the most exciting places for the production and exhibition of contemporary art and culture in Germany.

Artist-in-residence program for Nordic artists in Leipzig
The artists in Leipzig receive their own studio and are professionally accompanied by LIA director Anna-Louise Rolland and her team. Moreover, the artists will have the opportunity to participate in a curated group show during the Spinnerei Gallery Tour.
Residencies are highly coveted among artists. They allow a concentrated period of development away from familiar surroundings. Moreover, they provide the opportunity to gain new impressions and inspiration, and to build up a network. In interaction with local artists and curators, new ideas emerge and new projects can be developed and realised.
Duy Nguyen is a Norwegian-Vietnamese artist. His works span photography, design, and video. During his residency at LIA from August to October 2022; he wants to explore and reconstruct his childhood and family memories through a mixture of subjective recollections and imagination.
Danish artist Amalie Gabel, born in 1992, works with painting, installation and texts. During her three-month stay in Leipzig, she intends to work on a new book project. The texts will be complemented by a new series of square paintings in which the artist wishes to explore the following themes: “Windows into all the lives I haven’t lived, situations that never became doors.”

Charles Young (SCT)
The Scottish Charles Young studied architecture. His sculptures, in paper and wood, and animations draw from the forms and structures of the built environment. During his time in Leipzig, Young will be looking at the structures of the Spinnerei as well as other places in the city. The size of the studio space will allow him to focus on producing larger pieces of work in wood, cane and paper than has been possible up to this stage.
The Swedish artist Johanna Oskarsson’s practice is based in the visual aesthetics that is a darkening echo of the subcultures of post-punk and the industrial scene of the 80’s. Techniques she works in are drawing, film and digital jacquard weaving. During her stay in Leipzig she will work on a project around the proletarian socialist weightlifting clubs that were present in Germany in the 1920s -1930s.
Heikki Kaski is a Finnish artist working with visual art, sound and performance. The background of his visual art practice is photography, and it permiates also the other “categories” of visual arts that he does, be it painting or video. The other trajectory of his work is sound and especially vocal sound.

During her residency at Spinnerei Leipzig, the Danish painter Madelin Wilian would like to explore various examples of alternative communities as part of a primarily painting-based project.

Nordic Leipzig Meik Brüsch
From August to October 2020 Meik Brüsch – a visual artist and ethnologist – will attend the LIA (Leipzig International Art Programme) in the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei as an artist-in-residence.
Conny Karlsson Lundgren from Sweden stayed in Leipzig from February to April 2019 for his residency at Baumwollspinnerei.
