Reviving Cultural Heritage, Artistic Expression, and Creative Industries

The project Mishkal “Perform, Produce, Design,” is an initiative designed to foster a sustainable creative economy in Palestine. This project aims to strengthen a shared cultural identity by supporting diverse artistic expressions and preserving cultural heritage. Through this project, we seek to leverage Palestine’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant creative sector to drive both economic and social revitalization in a society facing increasing fragmentation.

Objectives

Our project aims to revive Palestinian cultural heritage, enhance artistic expression, and support creative industries. This is achieved by empowering Palestinian cultural entrepreneurs and artists, including those in the most marginalized areas, to strengthen their production and artistic capacities. The program leverages Palestine’s rich cultural heritage and creative sector to stimulate economic and social revitalization

Key Outputs and Program Structure

The programme is composed of three major arts and cultural results areas: (1) Site-Specific Performance Festival and (2) Arts Residency Programme in cultural heritage sites, and (3) Palestinian Design Month. These interventions will help partnerships, exchanges, and exhibitions, in particular with Europe, to grow, supporting and extending Palestinian’s cultural identity and cultural heritage reputation, as well as enabling women and young cultural actors to have opportunities to grow their practice, professionalise, and capture new showcasing, networking, or economic opportunities. Working with Palestinian and European partners and sponsors, the programme will support the visibility and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage (such as historic sites, crafts, and storytelling amongst other practices), diverse artistic and cultural expressions, and cultural creative industries (CCIs) especially in the design sector.

The program is dedicated to supporting the visibility and preservation of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, such as historic sites, traditional crafts, and storytelling. Additionally, it focuses on fostering diverse artistic and cultural expressions within the cultural creative industries (CCIs), with a particular emphasis on the design sector.

Target Groups

The target groups for the Mishkal Project include emerging and established Palestinian cultural entrepreneurs, creatives, and designers, with a special emphasis on women and youth. These individuals will receive support in the form of production grants, capacity development, networking, and showcasing and marketing opportunities. Additionally, the project engages civil society actors, artists’ collectives, and grassroots organizations, including youth and women’s cooperatives, working in cultural and artistic fields. European trainers and artists are also key participants, benefiting from opportunities to collaborate with their Palestinian counterparts through digital, face-to-face, and hybrid artistic projects.

The Mishkal Project is funded by the European Union and managed in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut and the British Council in Palestine in partnership with EUNIC – European Union National Institutes for Culture Cluster Palestine.
