As the urgency of digital media imposes itself on newsroom routines, there is a sense that the time and mental space devoted to the art of criticism is shrinking. Editors —and often journalists themselves —prioritize short, impactful news stories over longer articles that require more research and critical thinking.

In this talk with Cláudia Lucas ChéuFilipa Vaz Teixeira and José Paiva, moderated by Miguel Santos, we will seek to understand how criticism can impact the work of those who create art and why this type of piece is falling into disuse in journalism.
