1989 - Autumn dusk in the GDR. Well-deserved party member Wilhelm Powileit celebrates his 90th birthday – honored by party cadres, a choir of pioneers, relatives and friends. But the festivity in his East Berlin villa takes a tragic turn. Wilhelm, terrificly played by Bruno Ganz, must take the bitter note that his grandson has fled to the West. Matti Geschonneck's tragicomic chamber play captivates with its excellent actors and profound family debauchery.
In comparison with the book, scenes from the 1950s to the 1970s are not shown in the film. They At best they occur in narratives and dialogues of the protagonists. The second most important character in the film is Kurt Umnitzer (Sylvester Groth), while the book tell the story from the different perspectives of the family members. The time after the fall of the wall and up to the early 2000´s is not covered by the film.
