KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online film club to discuss German film.
How it works: Each month we choose a German film or series currently available to stream on U.S. platforms, watch it independently, and come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German film.
In our October session we will discuss Gold by Thomas Arslan, “an immigrant story, a story of how people set out for a foreign country, despite all the risks to life and limb, placing themselves in the hands of an obscure smuggler who promises a safety for his route that he cannot guarantee” (Perlentaucher). U.S. participants can stream the film in English on Tubi, Roku, Apple TV, among others, and in German with English subtitles on Prime Video.
This stately Western unfolds with the grace of the classics, as enamored of the rugged mountain landscapes as it is fearful of the potential challenges they contain. Starring the luminous Nina Hoss, Gold is a stark, tightly controlled exploration of genre tropes, following the journey of a group of German settlers using a visual language that is both intimate and epic. As with the great canonical Westerns, Gold seethes with metaphorical promise, trusting us to accompany the lush storytelling into territory both known and unknown.
Hosted by Jim Kolmar
Jim programs for SXSW and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival, and was a founding committee member of Festival Internacional de Cine Tulum (FICTU). He has participated in numerous international festival juries, panels, and committees.
KINO! Film Salon is a production of Telescope Film, in partnership with the German Film Office.
