Online-Seminars

The “Retas Budaya” online seminar series presents practical information on how GLAM institutions (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) can use digital technology to make their cultural collections open access, encouraging reuse by visitors.

First Edition: "Open Cultural Data in Indonesia"
19 June 2020

Goethe-Institut Indonesien

In this first edition, Hilmar Farid, Director General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture Indonesia, will discuss the current situation of open cultural data in Indonesia.

What has the government done to support open cultural data that can be accessed and reused by the community? What is the government’s strategy for supporting open cultural data in the future?

Hilmar Farid - Presentation - 19 June 2020

Second Edition: "Wikimedia Commons for GLAM Institutions"
3 July 2020

Goethe-Institut Indonesien

The current issue of the online seminar series introduces Wikimedia Commons, an open repository that can be used by GLAM institutions to present collections to the public.

What is offered by Wikimedia Commons as an open repository for GLAM institutions and their collections? What are the benefits of Wikimedia Commons for GLAM institutions?

Rachmat Wahidi - Presentation - 3 July 2020

Third Edition: "From Curation to Creation"
17 July 2020

The current edition of our online-seminar series will explore ways to use fiction and non-fiction writing to communicate GLAM’s cultural collections.

From the detailed description of the Sistine Chapel in Dan Brown’s novels, the journey and struggle of Prince Diponegoro in our history books, to the coffee table book filled with a compilation of Van Gogh’s works — a book can be a gateway to experiencing the cultural collections of galleries, libraries, art exhibitions, museums and archival institutions in a fun way.

With the right collaboration, a book can become a channel for distributing information, can be used for promotional purposes, and can be a means for monetizing GLAM institutions.

How can the collections of museums and galleries be transformed into works of fiction or non-fiction? What are the things to consider in the written publication? How does the book publishing industry work? Find the answer to all of the above questions in the Retas Budaya online-seminar series “From Curation to Creation”!

Paulus Eko Nugroho - Presentation - 17 July 2020

Fourth Edition: "Open Access & Copyrights"

He who is also a former Chief of Legal Creative Commons Indonesia together with Bhredipta Socarana (Creatice Commons Indonesia) will explore common copyrights issues that GLAM institution faced.

What legal aspects must be considered before a collection can be open access? How do you determine the copyright status of a collection or choose the right license? Why should public domain collections be open access? All questions regarding copyrights that need to be known before employing open access policies will be answered in this online seminar series.

Ari Juliano - Presentasi - 30 Juli 2020

Fifth Edition: "Data + Culture"
14 August 2020

Which province has the most temples? What paintings depict woodwind instruments? What song has the longest melody? Which city gave birth to the most music composers? These questions can be answered by using structured, linked and open data collected by Wikidata.

Wikidata allows currently existing information and cultural archives scattered throughout the internet to be connected to each other. What happens if data in one place can complement data in another? That is, what happens if strings of information can “talk” to each other?

This online seminar will introduce Wikidata as a cultural heritage data center. How can structured data play a role in recording cultural heritage? What is the importance of making cultural heritage data into structured, linked and open data? How can a GLAM institution make the most of an open, linked data ecosystem in recording its cultural heritage? Let’s explore data and culture at Retas Budaya online seminar!

Raisha Abdillah - Presentation - 14 August 2020
