next... II (Mali/Iceland)

In the video dance project next… II (Mali/Iceland) the dance artists Charmene Pang and Kettly Noël entered into a dialogue through performative video letters. Situated in different countries on different continents, Kettly Noël in Bamako, Mali, and Charmene Pang in Reykjavík, Iceland, the artists engaged with the soils and climates of the two countries, which could hardly be more different. One land is expanding, another is shrinking - melting glaciers and the growing desert.

Encompassing different aspects of their country, the unifying themes of the two artists include: Layers of earth, layers of ice, climatic conditions, movement, relocation and isolation. Both moved years ago to the respective countries they live in - what does this mean for them and their relation to the soil they move on? What for their work as artists? What does it tell about the land and what does it say about its culture? And what structures do they offer in order to find interaction through dance within a digital exchange across continents?
