Weave our Festival

The Goethe-Institut Shanghai, together with the Duke Kunshan University, has organised the workshop series Weave our festival for the Kultursymposium Weimar 2023. Participants of the workshops used simple printing and weaving methods in order to evade restrictions and the lack of freedom in technology and learned to listen to one another through physical exercises.

The artist group Prickly Paper and further partners came together in an artists’ residence for the workshops. Artists Yifei Chen, Feihong Ou and Tongyu Zhao held lectures and investigated the issues of trust and connection in discussions with the participants.

Soon it will be possible to borrow the artworks on a trust basis at the Goethe-Institut Shanghai. The participants' textile and woodcut artworks can currently be seen on the Institute's windows. "The beauty of printmaking is that it is accessible to everyone, and everyone can explore the art that they want to express in the process of hands-on work," explains Yifei Chen from the artist group.

Reports by Zhixian Zhang and Sadey Weiran Dong, students at Duke Kunshan University, offer insight into the workshops and the specifics of the methods used:  Report by Zhixian Zhang and Weiran Dong (PDF, 157 KB)   Report by Sadey Dong and Zhixian Zhang (PDF, 74 KB)
