Wayang kulit is a form of shadow puppetry that has been popular in Malaysia for centuries, although it has lost much of its popularity in recent years due to other forms of entertainment becoming available. There are only a few groups still in existence today, and the tradition is in danger of dying out.

A few years ago, Tintoy Chuo and master puppeteer Pak Dain joined forces with others to preserve this tradition and inspire future generations. They founded Fusion Wayang Kulit and since then have been delighting young audiences with performances inspired by pop culture – not only in Malaysia but also around the world.

Cultivated in many countries, the art of shadow puppetry spread from India to Southeast Asia centuries ago. Different countries developed their own versions with specific characters, but all of them use the characters from the Indian heroic epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana. The Malay version is characterized by particularly elaborate figures made out of exquisite materials that take days to create by hand.

Master puppeteer Pak Dain is the thirteenth generation to have learnt his art and is now passing it on to his students. The Fusion Wayang Kulit team strives to attract the audience of tomorrow in creative and humorous ways.

For the digital edition of the Kultursymposium Weimar, the shadow puppet troupe has recorded an exclusive new video performance inspired by the Star Wars saga.
