Savita Singh was born in Arrah, Bihar and spent most of her childhood in the Middle East. She did her MA and MPhil from Delhi University, following which she went to McGill University, Montreal, for higher studies. She taught there for over three years as a research assistant. She wrote her Ph.D. thesis on 'Discourse of Modernity in India: A Hermeneutical Study', and earned her degree from Delhi University. She has got her works published in both political theory and creative writing. .

She writes poetry and fiction both in Hindi and English. She has published three collections of poetry in Hindi: “Apne Jaisa Jeevan” (A Life Like Its Own, 2001) and “Neend Thee Aur Raat Thee” (There was Sleep and There was Night, 2005) and “Swapna Samay” (Dream Time), (2013). Her English poems are published in many reputed journals like the Critical Quarterly, Indian literature and The Journal of Poetry Society of India. Included in many anthologies, her poetry and prose writings have been translated into French, German, Spanish and Dutch, as well as almost all Indian languages. A collection of French translation of her poetry, “Je suis la maison des etoiles” appeared in 2008. An English translation of her Hindi Poems by Sukrita Paul Kumar has been published in their bilingual book, “Rowing Together” in 2008.

She co-edited a collection of women poets from different parts of the world, “Seven Leaves, One Autumn,” 2011. A collection of her representative Hindi poems appeared in 2012 entitled: “Fifty Poems: For the New Century”. This was translated into Odiya entitled “Jeur More Raasta” in 2013. She has received several honors and awards including Hindi Academy Award, 2002 and the coveted Indo-French Raza Award, 2005. She is currently a Professor in the School of Gender and Development Studies, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi.
