#MeToo-Movement

In the new topic’s framework, Converter decided to review how the discussion under the hashtag #MeToo went in the former Soviet countries. We wondered whether it influenced women’s rights, whether it strengthened the positions of feminism and gender parity, and whether it changed at least anything. Seven women authors shared their stories and observations over the wave of the #MeToo movement in their countries.

    Three whales of gender disparity

[Ukraine | Kyiv] In the summer of 2016, the Ukrainian social networks exploded with the #яНеБоюсьСказати ("I am not scared to say") movement. Reading the blood-curdling stories about sexual abuse and harassment, I could not understand why it was happening and why Ukrainian women had been silent so long. And most importantly, why did only the flash mob trigger realization of what has happened to the girls as an act of violence, and we must speak about it as loudly as possible.More ...

    Gender labeling should be stopped

[Russia | Moscow] If I had learnt in my childhood about feminism, the queer-theory and the punk culture, I would have been myself already then. However, I was told that I should be an obedient girl, and that, for example, Vasya, my next-door neighbor, was my fiancé. I was three then, Vasya, too. I used to hear, “You are a girl! Feminism in Belarus: a western poison or salvation?

[Belarus | Minsk] In the summer of 2016, the Ukrainian social networks exploded with the #яНеБоюсьСказати ("I am not scared to say") movement. Reading the blood-curdling stories about sexual abuse and harassment, I could not understand why it was happening and why Ukrainian women had been silent so long. I am no longer silent

[Germany | Berlin] In Russia, I did not refer to myself as a feminist, all the more so as the word was rather derogatory there, even in Moscow. Much has changed for myself and in myself since I moved to Germany. I became more interested in the subjects related to equality.More ...
