Director: Wolfgang Fischer
Drama, Germany, 2018
94 min.

Rike, a busy doctor, is educated, confident, determined and committed. She fulfils a long-held dream to spend her annual vacation sailing from Gibraltar to the small island of Ascension in the Atlantic Ocean. But her dream holiday is quickly broken off on the high seas, when, after a storm, she finds herself near a stricken fishing boat. Around a hundred people are about to drown. Rike follows maritime law and radios for help. As her request is going nowhere, she is forced to make a momentous decision.

What happens if a solo sailor (a yachtswoman alone on a boat) finds herself in this situation? Inspired by true events, “Styx” pursues this question in a fictional fashion, illustrating how economic interests compete with humanitarian principles, and how indifference destroys all hope.

Fischer literalises the turbulence we’re now navigating, and asks some stern questions of our moral compasses.” The Guardian
