Textbooks and teachers’ guides

In Cameroon, German is firmly anchored as a subject in the curriculum. In 1999, the Goethe-Institut developed the “Ihr und Wir” series of textbooks specifically for the teaching of German in the francophone part of sub-Saharan Africa. The series was last updated around ten years ago in collaboration with Hueber publishing house. Today, the textbook “Ihr und Wir Plus” is being revised thanks to special funding from the German Federal Foreign Office. The new textbook is again published in four volumes under the title “Und jetzt WIR” and is suitable for the five teaching levels at Cameroonian secondary schools. “Und jetzt WIR” sensitively addresses the realities of learners' lives in over 15 African countries, promotes multilingual skills and addresses current social and ecological developments. The series encourages controversial discussion of critical topics, strengthens communicative skills and, above all, takes into account current findings in the methodology and didactics of German as a foreign language. In terms of content, the textbook addresses current local topics in individual countries as well as global issues relating to sustainability.


‘Und jetzt WIR’ is a co-operation with Hueber Verlag, funded by the Federal Foreign Office. Dr Léonel Nanga-Me-Abengmoni, Project Coordinator on behalf of the Goethe-Institut, Arthur Rapp, Head of Language in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, Ilka Seltmann, Head of Language at the Goethe-Institut in Yaoundé (Cameroon), Sylvia Tobias, Managing Director of Sales, Marketing and Press at Hueber Verlag, and Nina Seidel-Apelt, International Sales Manager at Hueber Verlag, are in charge of the new edition of the textbook.
