For more than two decades, the Goethe‑Institut has been engaged in Yemen in the fields of cultural exchange and language education. Its diverse projects and formats include, among others, residency programs under the Martin Roth Initiative, photography exhibitions, the cultural association “The German House Sana’a,” as well as the EU‑funded multi‑year project “Yemen Creative Hubs.”

  • Yemen 3N Qurb

    The exhibition YEMEN 3N QURB: A CLOSER LOOK ON YEMEN brought together the work of four Yemeni photographers who explore the intimate, the everyday, and the overlooked in a country too often seen only through the lens of conflict to focus on what is often missed, overlooked, or erased.

  • Roots of Identity

    ROOTS OF IDENTITY: YEMENI PHOTO EXHIBITION delved into the rich fabric of Yemen's cultural heritage, exploring the intricate threads that have woven the tapestry of its identity throughout history. From traditional practices to contemporary expressions, this exhibition celebrated Yemen's diverse traditions, customs, unique architecture, and artistic practices.

  • Yalla Sawa building togetherness

    As part of the “Building Togetherness” call, 18 Yemeni artists and cultural practitioners were selected by a jury composed of Yemen Creative Hubs consortium partners and external experts. Between 2024 and 2025, they implemented artistic and socio-cultural projects across Yemen. Each project reflect the essence of “Building Togetherness”—exploring the diverse ways in which culture, art, and communities come together to connect, collaborate, and create.

  • Creative Hubs Grants

    In December 2022, 45 grants were awarded to cultural practitioners and organisations across Yemen. These grants supported a variety of projects, including films, exhibitions, writing projects, training workshops, photography, podcasts, handicrafts productions, online campaigns, performative arts and music.

  • Yemen Creative Hubs

    The "Yemen Creative Hubs" project, funded by the European Union and co-funded by the Goethe-Institut, aims to enable cultural civil society organizations and practitioners to participate effectively in development and peace processes and to contribute to overcoming the impact of the humanitarian crisis and the sense of loss in Yemeni civil society.

  • ta.dh.am: a photographic exhibition from yemen

    The Arabic word ta.dh.am (تَضَام) stands poetically for holding onto one another, coming together – the embrace. The group exhibition addressed the importance of this concept within societies giving an intimate insight into the everyday life and special moments of togetherness of people in Yemen.

  • Cultural Networks Yemen

    With the project “Cultural Networks Yemen,” the Goethe‑Institut’s cultural engagement in Yemen began. The initiative, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, focused specifically on supporting the local arts and cultural scene.

  • Deutsches Haus Sana'a

    The German House for Cooperation and Culture, Sana'a (Yemen), is a registered Yemeni non-governmental organization (NGO) for cultural exchange, which, on a non-profit basis, represents the fields of language work, cultural work, and library work in Yemen at a high level in cooperation with the Goethe Institute and the Federal Foreign Office as the only German cultural association.

  • STRENGTHENING GERMAN PROGRAMS IN YEMEN

    The Goethe-Institut supports German language programs in Yemen through various offerings for teachers and students at schools and universities throughout the country.
