Al-Baraa Mansoor Al-Sameai

Between Colours and Black

"Between Colours and Black" is a project that sheds light on the traditional women's fashion in Taiz City, which largely disappeared after the wave of religious extremism that swept Yemen in 1990. Al-Baraa points out that women, especially in the city of Taiz, wore once colourful traditional clothing and adorned their ears with blooms wherever they went. Nowadays, they wear black abayas in most parts of the country, except in some villages that still preserve the traditional dress. Moreover, some young people in Taiz are making efforts to organise beautiful events where young women and children wear these garments — a vibrant way of preserving Yemen's heritage and staying connected to the roots and identity.
Al-Baraa Mansoor Al-Sameai (b. 1997 in Taiz, Yemen) initially pursued a degree in business administration. However, his hobby in photography, which ignited in 2010, transformed into his professional pursuit. By 2017, he had transitioned into a career as a photographer and filmmaker, collaborating with several international institutions and organisations. Three years ago, he established his own production company. Al-Baraa has actively participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the "ta.dh.am" exhibition, during which, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, works were exhibited in Berlin and Amman. His focus lies in showcasing the beauty of Yemen and the narratives of its people, aiming to counteract the negative stereotypes portraying Yemen solely as a war-torn nation devoid of life. Through his social media platforms, he endeavours to share the splendour of Yemen with the world.
