Design in Archaeology: Study Trip in Germany 2025

The Design in Archaeology study trip in Germany was a seven-day immersive programme exploring the intersection of design and archaeology through Roman heritage sites. It brought together Jordanian participants for an intensive experience combining site visits, academic exchange, and hands-on design practices.

About the Project:

This study trip focused on examining how ancient Roman design principles can inform contemporary design practices. Taking place in Xanten and Cologne, the programme provided participants with in-depth exposure to archaeological sites, museums, and academic institutions.

Participants visited key institutions including the LVR Archaeological Park Xanten, MiQua – Museum im Quartier, Museum Ludwig, and the Romano-Germanic Museum. These visits offered insights into Roman architecture, urban planning, material culture, conservation practices, and museum presentation techniques.

The programme also included an academic exchange at the Technical University of Cologne, where participants engaged with design and archaeology through practical and interdisciplinary approaches.

Through fieldwork methods such as sketching, photography, research, and collaborative workshops, participants developed design concepts inspired by Roman spatial and cultural legacies. The programme encouraged translating archaeological knowledge into contemporary design outputs, resulting in prototypes and research-based work.

Goal of the project:

  • To explore the relationship between design and archaeology
  • To enhance participants’ professional and academic knowledge
  • To encourage interdisciplinary approaches combining heritage and design
  • To provide international exposure to museum practices and conservation methods
  • To foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between Jordan and Germany
  • To support the development of innovative design projects inspired by historical contexts
