Deutsch Underground-Filme
About DUF
DUF (Deutsche Underground-Filme), a film project by the Berlin-based independent magazine RISIKO, is dedicated to exceptional works of German underground cinema that have rarely had the opportunity to be shown on the big screen. These films challenge familiar ways of seeing, open up new perspectives and inspire reflection.
First Edition in Tokyo
In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Tokyo, DUF comes all the way to Tokyo for its first edition taking place from November 4-7, 2026.
The first edition is dedicated to the theme “Berlin Underground 1979-1989”: punk, industrial, experimental art, feminism, queerness, and DIY culture shaped the creative energy of those years. In a divided Berlin, young people searched for new forms of freedom and expression, creating works of remarkable radicality and intensity. DUF 79-89 brings these powerful cinematic testimonies together for the first time in an event series at the Goethe-Institut Tokyo.
The film program will be accompanied by guest talks, exhibitions, and pop-up formats, offering multifaceted insights into the cultural and social currents that defined Berlin’s underground scene of the 1980s.
A unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere, creativity, and spirit of transformation that characterized this influential era from a variety of perspectives.
