In exchange with the world. For diversity, understanding and trust.
The Goethe-Institut in Japan promotes international cultural exchange. Our projects are created in partnership and close cooperation with cultural institutions, cultural initiatives, and artists from Japan, Germany, and worldwide. They invite an open, trusting dialog, joint artistic production, and the exchange of diverse perspectives.
We want to make it easier for an international audience to access contemporary German-language literature, non-fiction and books for children and young people. Since its foundation 50 years ago, our funding programme has financially supported the publication of around 7,000 books in 45 languages.
The funding and translation of works of new German drama into other languages has been an essential part of the activities of Goethe Institutes worldwide for many years. These translations are made available by the Theatre Library.
The Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto offers artists and cultural professionals from Germany the opportunity to live and work in Japan as part of a three-month scholarship.
Our archive comprises around 400 films on DVD, which we make available free of charge to cinematheques, film clubs, film festivals, cultural and educational institutions for non-commercial screenings.
The Onleihe is the Goethe-Institut's digital library. Around 20,000 German-language e-books, audio books, films, materials for German learners, magazines and newspapers are available to download from the Onleihe.
