Freiburger Barockorchester
Passion, joy of playing, and authenticity – these are the musical cornerstones of the Freiburger Barockorchester (FBO). For more than three decades, the FBO has been among the world's leading period instrument ensembles, performing over 100 concerts annually in Germany and abroad.
The orchestra was founded by a group of graduates from the Freiburg University of Music with the aim of performing Baroque and Classical music in a historically informed manner. Soon after its founding, the ensemble gained international recognition and quickly became one of the most sought-after orchestras in the early music scene. This success is reflected in more than 130 recordings, some of which have won prestigious awards.
In addition to its own subscription series in Freiburg, Stuttgart, and Berlin, the FBO performs at the world's most renowned venues, including the Lincoln Center in New York, the Elbphilharmonie, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Philharmonie de Paris. The ensemble is also a frequent guest at major international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, and the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, among others.
The musical leadership of the orchestra lies with Cecilia Bernardini and Gottfried von der Goltz, who direct the ensemble from the violin. In keeping with the principles of historically informed performance, the FBO usually performs without a conductor. However, for selected programs—such as opera productions or Romantic symphonies—the orchestra collaborates with renowned conductors such as Pablo Heras-Casado, René Jacobs, and Sir Simon Rattle.
The FBO shares a close musical partnership with Kristian Bezuidenhout, Isabelle Faust, Dorothee Mields, as well as with Vox Luminis, the Zürcher Sing-Akademie, and the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin.
