Woodblock Carving Wanderlust

The solo exhibition ‘Woodcarving Wanderlust- 木版遊旅譚’ by woodcarving artist Cho Ryota, the winner of the Villa Kamogawa Prize at the Art for Tomorrow 2024 exhibition, will take place.
More than a dozen works will be shown, including the award-winning piece 'Ancient Mikines'. There will also be an open studio where visitors can gain an insight into Cho's creative process.

About the exhibition
By using a woodblock press and copper engraving ink, I develop the European style of woodblock engraving into a contemporary expression. Engraving is not just a ‘scraping’, it is an act of ‘drawing’, and through lines and textures I chisel out the depth of the landscape.
The theme of the exhibition is travel, starting with European landscapes such as Greece and Croatia and travelling east to India. The motifs are stone structures and local landscapes. The carving of the wooden blocks creates a single path in which time and memory are inscribed. This is the journey followed by my own hand, a ‘woodcut travel narrative’ engraved on the panel.
