Closing Talk Event

As part of the public program accompanying the exhibition “Reset. Düsseldorf Photography after Thomas Ruff” at the Gallery of Goethe-Institut Tokyo, we are pleased to host a seated talk in our Library.

Exhibiting artist Thomas Neumann and independent curator Masafumi Fukagawa will discuss the development of Düsseldorf photography, tracing its history from the Düsseldorf School of Photography founded by Bernd and Hilla Becher to its evolution in the early 2000s and beyond. The conversation will explore the movement’s lasting influence and the artistic contexts that shaped a new generation of photographers.

Speakers

Thomas Neumann (born 1975 in Cottbus, Germany) seeks to look beyond the surface of photography. Often, it is a historical interest that leads to a new body of work. In particular, he is preoccupied with the transitions between nature and culture, and between politics and the individual.

Masafumi Fukagawa (born 1958 in Saga City, Japan) is an independent curator and critic specializing in the fields of photography theory, design theory, media theory, and performance theory. Has curated numerous exhibitions, including “Distance and proximity - Horizon of B&H Becher,” “Come to Bauhaus!,” “TATSUMI ORIMOTO: ART x LIFE,” and “Game of Photography.”
