Manifesto of Spring is a large-scale exhibition that addresses economic inequality and the climate crisis as central issues of contemporary democracy, and proposes alternative future perspectives through the theories of the Anthropocene and the Capitalocene. To this end, a cooperation agreement was signed in October last year with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (Germany) and M+ (Hong Kong) to realize a joint curatorial collaboration.
With this multi-sensory installation, the artist invites us on an ontological journey into the depths of the ocean, posing the question of what it means to become estranged, fluid, and the Other.
First, video portraits of the visitors are recorded and transformed into hybrid deep-sea creatures. As our human contours gradually dissolve, we enter a tunnel-like space in the shape of a sea snail. Underwater footage from the archive of the Schmidt Ocean Institute flows through the space like a current—a stream of life from the hadal zone, the deepest part of the ocean. The visual and acoustic composition forms a living, sensory membrane between us and the beings we have become. As we walk through the tunnel and dive deeper into the marine world, we can follow and interact with our alter egos.
Anne Duk Hee Jordan is a Berlin-based artist who poses fundamental questions about nature in order to understand ecological interconnections. In collaboration with experts in marine biology, life sciences, and ecology, she expands the concepts and language of her works and creates immersive environments by combining diverse audiovisual elements.
She has had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions, including the Center for Contemporary Arts Glasgow (2024), the Gwangju Biennale (2023), the Barbican Centre in London (2023), and transmediale in Berlin (2021/2022), as well as in the NJP Commission at the Nam June Paik Art Center. In 2024, she was awarded the Lip Society Award. A former rescue diver and kinesthetic therapist, she is currently Professor of New Media at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe.
The work was commissioned and produced by the National Asian Culture Center Gwangju, South Korea, in collaboration with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.
