Turning toward the world with care and playfulness, building and nurturing relationships: these qualities characterize the contemporary aesthetic phenomenon of cuteness. Cuteness is full of ambivalence. It can appear harmless and yet unsettling; it can stimulate consumption while also expressing protest in a subversive way.
With the cute opera Dollhouse, the German composer Clemens K. Thomas has brought cuteness to the opera stage for the first time. He understands “cute opera” as a new operatic genre that takes animated, emotionally charged relationships seriously and touches audiences in a post-ironic way. It invites people to approach the world and its challenges with openness and curiosity.
Premiered in 2024 at the Hamburg State Opera, two scenes from Dollhouse will be presented in Seoul in a Korean translation (translation by Saerom Park). The performers are Jae‑Eun Park (soprano) and Eunkuk Kim (tenor), accompanied on the piano by Dokyung Han.
The Korean translation of Dollhouse was created in close collaboration between Clemens K. Thomas and Saerom Park. Having grown up in Seoul, Park has been living and working in Germany since 1999 as a cellist, chamber musician and actress. Both share an interest in an innovative artistic connection between musical tradition and the present.
The performance serves as the starting point for a panel discussion on contemporary opera in Korea and the potential of “cute opera”. What challenges are associated with new opera productions? What expectations does the Korean audience bring? Which subjects and narrative approaches are particularly suitable? And what new color could cuteness add to Korean opera?
The panelists are Park Jae‑Eun (opera singer and assistant professor at Ewha University), Uzong Choe (composer and professor at Seoul National University), Minhee Lee (musicologist and music critic specializing in new music in Korea), and Hogen Yun (conductor and former artistic director of the Korean National Opera).
