November 9, 1989: At the border crossing Bornholmer Straße in Berlin, the border guards of the GDR and their colleagues from the customs authorities wonder about the statement that Günter Schabowski, member of the politburo of the Central Committee of the SED, gives at a televised press conference: From now on, all East German citizens can apply for private trips to Western countries. In their euphoria many people do not realize that passport and visa are necessary for this: they rush to the next border crossing. Lieutenant Colonel Schäfer and his subordinates are not yet aware of what awaits them this night. It ends with the opening of the border - the beginning of the end of the GDR. Bornholmer Straße is a ravishingly ironic and surprisingly moving comedy on the verge of despair, about heroes who do not want to be any.
