Jürgen Osterhammel

(born 01.06.1952 in Wipperfürth), historian.

Jürgen Osterhammel studied history, political science, German and philosophy in Marburg and London. He completed his doctorate at the Gesamthochschule Kassel. After his habilitation, he held various professorships, most recently that of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Konstanz. In addition to earlier publications on European and Asian history, his book Die Verwandlung der Welt. Eine Geschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts achieved a high profile. Jürgen Osterhammel received the NDR Kultur Non-Fiction Book Prize for it and was honoured with other prizes such as the Federal Cross of Merit with Star.
