The Goethe-Institut offers a wide range of German courses for all language levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for advanced learners. We offer onsite courses, blended learning courses and online courses.
 

The duration of a German course at the Goethe-Institut depends on various factors, such as the language level, the type of course and the frequency of lessons. A standard onsite course, in which you can complete half a language level, usually takes 10 weeks. We also offer compact courses in which you can also complete half a language level in 5 weeks.
 

We teach communicatively and interactively, which aims to improve students' practical language skills. Our teachers are qualified German teachers with experience in teaching German as a foreign language.

In our courses you will learn in small groups of approx. 8-16 participants.

Onsite courses in the morning (incl. break of 15 minutes): 10:00am — 1:15pm
Onsite courses in the evening (incl. break of 15 minutes): 6:00pm — 9:15pm
Blended learning courses: 6:00pm — 7:30pm / 7:45pm — 9:15pm
 

The courses start with a welcome and a warm-up. Then, the Homework will be discussed and content from the previous lesson will be repeated. It is important to us that all skills are practiced in the lessons: Reading, listening, writing and speaking. Grammar is practiced functionally and in connection with other language activities. This happens in a positive learning atmosphere. At the end of the lesson, you will reflect on what you have learned and will be given homework for the next lesson.

Onsite course:
An onsite course always takes place at the institute. The courses work with a book and the participants are given homework.
Onsite courses last either 10 weeks (one session per week) or 5 weeks (one session per week + independent study).
Number of teaching units: 40

Online group course:
There are two different selectable formats for online group courses:
50/50:
50% of the lessons take place live via Zoom and 50% are offered online as independet study on the Goethe learning platform “Moodle”.

25/75:
25% of the lessons take place live via Zoom and 75% are offered online as independet study on the Goethe learning platform “MeinGoethe.de”.

The Goethe-Institut Netherlands offers children's and youth courses twice a year, each lasting one semester. These courses are designed for children and teenagers who have at least one German-speaking parent, meaning they are growing up multilingual. You can enrol for a German course online on our website. In our webshop, you can book courses quickly and easily once you have done the Intake. As a beginner (level A1.1), a placement test is not necessary and you can book the course directly in the webshop. If you are an advanced learner, please book our free placement test first.

We will then schedule an intake and send you an offer including the planned course dates and possibly also the course content. Once the offer has been signed, we will put you in touch with the teacher.

After the free test, you will receive a course recommendation by e-mail from a teacher and you can register for the appropriate course via our webshop.

You will not take an official Goethe-Zertifikat exam at the end of the course. However, your teacher will provide you with a short end-of-course test.
If you are interested in an official certificate, you can book the exam with us up to 1 year after the end of the course at a reduced price for course participants.
This exam is not included in the course fee.

Course participants receive the book list with ISBN by e-mail immediately after registering for an onsite course via the web store.
The online courses do not work with a book, but entirely with digital learning content.

You can pay for the language courses in the webshop by credit card or via IDEAL.

You will receive an automatic booking confirmation after you have paid by credit card.

When you book a course, you will only receive a certificate of attendance upon completion. If you need or want an official certificate of your language level, e.g. for studying in Germany or for a job application, you can also register for a German exam. We offer various exams, including the Goethe-Zertifikat at levels A1 to C2 and the Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf. No, unfortunately this is not possible. You can find the course materials from the lesson and the homework on the digital learning platform. Please also let your teacher know.

You can eat food you have brought with you in the cafeteria on the ground floor. There is also a vending machine for hot drinks in the cafeteria. There are two supermarkets and many small cafés and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the institute.

The library in Amsterdam and the program department organize cultural events such as readings, film screenings, speak-dating events and other events.
