A perspective movie theater, Viktor Smyshlyaev, Yevgeny Burov, 1985-1986

​The project of the Perspective Cinema, also known as the “Lens’ or “Iron”, is a benchmark for the generation of ‘paper architecture’ in Novosibirsk. The above text was inserted by Viktor Smyshlyaev into one of the graphic sheets of the architectural presentation of the project. The text is evidence of the crisis of modernism; it declares professional self-destruction, signifies the outcome of architectural thinking from the material into sensations, ‘film-like’, which may be considered the characteristic features summarizing the experience of Siberian paper architecture.

“The multitude of methods for creating illusory worlds allowed the designers to break the huge lens of the theater with numerous unusual objects of radical architectonics, and the restless graphics stress that the building is made from somebody’s dreams or from something similar, from which any film is made.

The movie theater

  1. Movies are losing their Force. This has several causes, for example, the progress of television. But, maybe, this phenomenon has different roots? One thing is clear: the movie theater is dying, and we can support its existence artificially or give it up as an obsolete form of the illusory world. We accept the second viewpoint. This viewpoint may be stated differently as a negation of any forms of False Being. This may be expressed by the thesis: towards life itself.
  2. There is no positive Action that will lead to the return of the cinema. We have only negative action left – destruction and self-destruction.
  3. The only product of this negation, when negativity itself tries to be negated, will be immortality, a kind of pre-mortality, when an organized form is subject to the beginning of negation, when a classical foundation becomes united with the suprematic foundation and provides a sensual sign of cold and emptiness, which moves forward any entity and any action. Forms will rise from the gravity of the Earth and will hit each other with the contradiction of Being and Non-being. In the collision of the parts of the plane of negated action and of the exploded form, unclearly distinct, that deep precipice will be seen, separating us from the real flow of life. We wish to experience the fullness of life. But we are unable to become filled with it, so, we indiscriminately accept the substitute of life as one unilateral reality – the continuous flow of other people’s will, of alien being, of the alien”.
