Background
The Science Film Festival initiated and implemented by the Goethe-Institut and its partners in 2005 is a celebration of science communication in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America: In cooperation with local partners it promotes science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through international films with accompanying educational activities. The Science Film Festival presents scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be fun. The event has grown considerably becoming the largest event of its kind worldwide.
In Vietnam the film festival has been organized since 2010 and has become an event at schools for students and teachers at secondary level.
Theme of the Year 2022: Equal Opportunities in Science
Equal opportunity is a state of fairness in which individuals are treated similarly, unhampered by artificial barriers or prejudices or preferences. Innovations resulting from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields have positively touched nearly every aspect of human life. Yet, even today, science can exacerbate the equality divide in subtle and more pervasive ways and the continued underrepresentation of minorities and women in the scientific enterprise represents a challenge to cultivate an adequate international scientific workforce.
The Science Film Festival 2022 is committed to increasing awareness on the issue of diversity and inclusiveness in STEM from underrepresented groups, in which studying and working in science is open to all and for the benefit of all sections of society.
Why is the call?
Science Film Festival is a collection of edutainment products by international TV stations, reporters, filmmakers that explain complex knowledge of science and nature in very simple and understandable ways.
The Goethe-Institut Vietnam in collaboration with local partners from different sectors including educational institutions, libraries, NGOs and schools has promoted science knowledge through science documentaries/ films and hands-on activities.
On the occasion of the theme in 2022: Equal Opportunities in Science, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi would like to launch for the first time a call for independent clubs of STEM teachers in order to mobilize more potential resources to reach out to new target groups, promote the message “science is for all” and enhance the synergy among the communities of teaching and learning STEM and science.
Who is eligible?
We are looking for 03 independent clubs of STEM teachers being active in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City that:
- Consist of STEM teachers from different schools in Vietnam
- Are major in STEM education for students aged from 12-16
- Are interested in using science films as a tool to stimulate science knowledge and create various hands-on activities that better support students with learning science
- Are capable of hosting STEM events at schools/ community space
Some definitions to be clarified:
- A CLUB of STEM teachers means an active group of STEM teachers that has a management board, clear vision and mission and has been officially running in STEM education
- Activity & Campaign: within SFF 2022, activity means film screening sessions, experiments, discussions/ exchange sessions which can be done physically or online or in hybrid format. Campaign refers to the whole implementation of activities
- Target group of the project: this project targets students aged 12-16 in Vietnam, who are interested in STEM
