Southern Africa Component

The Southern Africa Component announces jury members and the selected 72 artists and creatives under Round 1. The grants give the selected artists and creatives an opportunity to co-develop heritage narratives in clusters led by heritage organisations across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia over six months, resulting in artistic co-productions that communicate the meaning and relevance of Southern African cultural heritage.

The 72 recipients are from Southern Africa and the European Union. South Africa has 35 recipients, followed by Zimbabwe with 12, Namibia with nine, EU member states with six, Botswana with five, Lesotho with four and Eswatini with one.

The co-development provides opportunities for artists, creatives and heritage organisations to learn from one another, exchange knowledge and build connections across the region. Through their engagement with communities, they can bring local stories to a wider audiences and create new ways for people to connect with their cultural heritage.

The selection process was supported by a jury of individual cultural practitioners and representatives from cultural and heritage organisations across the region. Their expertise and diverse perspectives helped assess the applications, recognising the different ways artists and creatives engage with heritage.
