The City pedals!

What does it feel like to navigate Bucharest by bicycle every day? The City Pedals! invited the public to discover the city from a cyclist's perspective through an interactive installation that combined art, game design and anthropological research.

Instead of presenting research findings in a traditional exhibition format, the project transformed real-life cycling experiences into a playful and immersive journey. Visitors were invited to step into the shoes of Bucharest's cyclists, encountering the challenges, decisions and unexpected situations that shape everyday movement through the city.
At the heart of the installation was an interactive game inspired by anthropological research on cycling and public space. Through gameplay, visual materials and personal stories, participants explored themes such as safety, accessibility, fragmented cycling infrastructure and the ongoing negotiation of shared urban space. Visitors could also contribute their own experiences, observations and ideas, gradually building a collective picture of cycling in Bucharest.By bringing together research, creativity and public participation, The City Pedals! created a space for dialogue about how cities are experienced and shared. The project demonstrated how artistic approaches can make complex urban issues tangible and relatable, encouraging people to reflect on mobility, public space and the possibilities for creating more bicycle-friendly cities.
