CYCLE UP! Sustainable Residencies - 2025 Edition

In the summer of 2025, four artists - Elena Falomo, Silvan Hagenbrock, Mohar Kalra and Ester Tajrychová participated in a residency programme which took place in Katowice, Broumov, České Budějovice and Tartu and was focused on new artistic perspectives on bicycle cultures and communities. Elena Falomo

During her six-week CYCLE UP! residency in České Budějovice, Elena set out to imagine what the city could look like twenty years from now, if cycling infrastructure, governance, ecology, and urban systems were more closely intertwined. This vision gradually took shape through a series of collaborative methods, with the bicycle serving as both research tool and connector between people, places, and perspectives.

Silvan Hagenbrock

During his month-long residency in the Estonian city of Tartu, Silvan Hagenbrock, a German artist and videographer based in Berlin, delved into the world of abandoned, forgotten, and so-called “trash” bicycles. Through this exploration, he uncovered not only the stories behind these bikes but also the many methods of repairing and maintaining them, and why the act of repair carries deeper value.

Mohar Kalra

During his six-week residency in Broumov, American artist and researcher Mohar Kalra set out to explore the city from the perspective of its residents, focusing on the everyday routes people take to reach places that matter in their lives. Through close collaboration with local enthusiasts and community members, he developed and tested an interactive project that aimed to reflect these personal journeys. By the end of his stay, he offered the people of Broumov a memorable and engaging experience, a bike ride on a specially designed prototype bike, that invited them to see their city in a new light.

Ester Tajrychová

During her CYCLE UP! residency in Katowice, Ester, an illustrator based in the Czech Republic, focused on showing the city’s cycling culture and environment on paper using different methods of visual arts and through engaging the locals.
