Aliou Diack
Aliou Diack was born in 1987 in a family of farmers in Sidi Bougou in Senegal, the question of agriculture is central to his everyday artistic approach. He is also part of a Sufi community, the Mourides, who regularly recite the zikr. His repetitive painting gestures mirror these rituals: sowing pigments onto canvas like his daily life as a farmer planting seeds. In this way, he integrates mystical Sufi practices and expresses his spiritual beliefs. His art embodies a constant tension rooted in Mouride tradition: the pursuit of self-knowledge, understanding the world, and seeking wisdom by letting go of time and certainty. The verbal or gestural repetition becomes a pathway to communion with nature.
Graduating at the top of his class from the National School of Arts in Dakar in 2014, Aliou stood out for the visual strength of his paintings, minimalistic, yet emanating a primal, instinctive natural world. In 2024, he presented Mutations at the Montresso Foundation in Marrakech, Morocco. In 2023, he also participated in the OFF Biennale of Dakar with La Meute at OH GALLERY. His notable solo exhibitions include Space One, Tokyo, Japan (2024), Garabou Wolof at Michael Fuchs Galerie, Berlin, Germany (2022), and The Bed of Life, an outdoor installation at the Théodore Monod Museum, Dakar, Senegal (2021). His work has also been featured in major events such as the exhibition at the Palais des Papes with the Blachère Foundation in Avignon, France (2015). Aliou Diack’s artworks are held in several prestigious collections, including the Blavy Collection and the Eiffage Collection.
