The twelve-year civic-military dictatorship that ruled Uruguay from 1973 to 1985 was the subject of much controversy due to its violations of human rights. How do young people of the post-dictatorship generation deal with the trauma they inherited from their parents? In this interview, sociologist and expert on transitional justice and social memory Gabriela Fried Amilivia talks about the Uruguayan dictatorship and its reappraisal, as well as coming to terms with the past, and overcoming trauma. She tells us about the legacy of state terror in Uruguay, the social denial and silencing of the victims' perspectives, and about recent developments in the last decade, which show that the impact of these state crimes are still being felt today.
